I’ve found that there is a definite advantage to be gained by blogging with intent. Choosing a niche, deciding on the way you will monetise your site, how much traffic you would like to get, the type of theme you will use if you are creating a blog are all up to you and have a certain impact on the level of success you will achieve. But nothing beats the dedication of consistent work on your blog.
When I first began building blogs with the intention of making regular money using Adsense I was enthusiastic and motivated, but more importantly, I was singularly focused on a single blog and so all of my efforts were thrown solely into writing posts for it. Consequently it quickly gained a lot of high rankings for long tails which drew in a rapidly expanding base of visitors from search engine traffic. This in turn led to a steady stream of Adsense revenue. The niche I had chosen was a hot issue in a relevant, newsworthy niche and was wide enough to give me almost limitless opportunities to add new posts.
On the downside I had created a high maintenance site. This particular site required constant updates to keep it relevant and to maintain the number of visitors that had started to come. It was a monster that required constant feeding. This would have been okay if it was the only website I was planning on maintaining, but it’s not, so whenever my attention is taken by another project this site loses the impact it originally had.
This was a critical mistake I had made early on, the idea of the niche seemed to be a good one to me, but it didn’t suit the time allowances I was prepared to make. It earns me a steady income but it’s not quite the passive income I would prefer – and can get – with other niches.
One of the big mistakes made by newcomers to the Internet Marketing game is to try to take on too much too soon. There are any number of opportunities and different ways of making money but you have to choose the way that suits your time constraints and your personality. I’ve been guilty of spreading myself too thinly and without a properly organised action pan found myself scattered all over the place without a clear focus or goal. The result it a tendency to let things drift with zero (or close to zero) progress being made.
At least with a goal it’s possible to constantly aim to reach a target which helps to maintain motivation.
